Selling a larger position back to euros: check the EUR order book depth before you click sell

Guides · 2026-10-17

The last traded price on a chart says nothing about how much you can sell at that price. For a few hundred euros it rarely matters. For a position you have built up over years, a single market order on a euro pair can walk down several levels of the order book and leave you with noticeably less than you expected. Euro pairs are often thinner than their USDT equivalents, so the route you choose and the way you place the order count for more than the fee line on the receipt.

Read the bid side before you decide on an amount

Open the spot pair you plan to use, for example BTC against EUR, and switch the order book to show more levels if the app allows it. Look at the bids, the buyers waiting below the current price, and add up how much quantity sits within a small distance of the best bid. If your sell is larger than that, a market order will consume those levels and continue lower. Some exchanges show a depth chart next to the book, which makes the same point visually: a steep wall close to the price is good news, a shallow slope is a warning.

Compare the euro pair with a two-step route

Check the same coin against USDT or USDC. That book is frequently much deeper, so selling there and then converting the stablecoin to euros can produce a better total even after two sets of trading fees. Work it out with the numbers on your screen at that moment: expected fill on the EUR pair against expected fill on the stablecoin pair plus the conversion. Read your current maker and taker rates on the exchange's fee page rather than assuming they are the same on both pairs.

Use limit orders and split the amount

A limit order slightly below the best bid fills as far as there are buyers at that price or better and then waits, so you never sell below the level you set. Selling in several tranches over a few hours, or across a couple of days, gives the book time to refill. Keep an eye on open orders so that a resting limit does not sit forgotten when the market moves away. If you use a market order at all, keep it to the part of the size that the visible depth can absorb.

Plan the euro withdrawal and keep the records

Before selling, confirm that your account can withdraw euros to your German bank and which method it uses, because there is little point converting if the payout route is not available to you. Afterwards, export the trade confirmations showing date, price, quantity and fees. A German tax adviser will want those details for each tranche, and having them in one file is easier than reconstructing them from screenshots in spring.
