Doing a dry-run restore of your wallet backup before moving savings off an exchange
A recovery phrase you have never tested is a hope, not a backup. How to rehearse restoring a self-custody wallet safely before moving significant funds from Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget.
Multiple exchanges | Germany | EUR | fees, access and account safety
Moving savings from an exchange to a wallet you control removes one kind of risk and adds another. The exchange no longer holds your keys, but now everything depends on your recovery phrase. Many people write it down during setup, put the paper away and never look at it again. If a word was misspelled, the order was wrong or the paper becomes illegible, they discover the problem only when the phone or device fails, which is the worst possible moment. A dry-run restore lets you find such mistakes while the funds are still small or still on the exchange. This guide explains how to rehearse a restore safely, what to check and how to store the backup afterwards, before you transfer meaningful amounts from Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget.
Rehearse with a small balance first
Create the wallet and write down the recovery phrase on paper exactly as shown, then withdraw a small amount from your exchange to it. Do not move your savings yet. The rehearsal should involve real but trivial funds, so you can confirm that restoring brings back access to an actual balance. Keep the bulk of your holdings on the exchange, protected by strong authentication and a withdrawal allowlist, until the rehearsal has succeeded and you are confident in your backup.
Restore on a clean device or after reset
The point of the test is to prove that the paper alone is enough. Restore the wallet on a second device you control, or reset the original wallet application and restore it from the phrase. Type the words carefully in the correct order. Never enter the phrase on a website, in a browser extension you did not install yourself, or anywhere connected to an unknown service. If the restored wallet shows the same address and the small balance, your backup works. If not, stop, create a fresh wallet and repeat the process.
Check what the restore does not cover
A recovery phrase restores the keys, but some wallets also use extra elements such as an optional passphrase, custom account paths or settings for additional networks. If you used any of these, note them on the backup so that a restore reproduces the same accounts. Make sure the restored wallet displays the tokens you hold on each network. Also check that you know how to send funds back to your exchange deposit address, so you can move savings in either direction when needed.
Store the backup and set a reminder
After a successful test, store the paper somewhere safe from fire, water and curious eyes, and consider a second copy in a separate secure location. Do not photograph it or store it in the cloud. Write a note in your calendar to check the paper's condition once a year. Only then move your savings in stages, testing each new network with a small amount. A wallet backup you have tested is far more valuable than one you merely assume is correct.

Scenario checkpoint
- Withdraw only a small amount to a new wallet before testing the restore and keep savings on the exchange meanwhile.
- Restore the wallet from paper on a second device or after a reset and confirm the address and balance match.
- Note any optional passphrase or custom settings on the backup so a future restore reproduces the same accounts.
- Store the tested backup safely without photos or cloud copies and check its condition once a year.
